Collaborative research
on the tools that
protect online communities.
The Tooling Research Committee brings together researchers, practitioners, and engineers to study what trust & safety teams actually need. We publish research and produce datasets, frameworks, and maps that make safety tools easier to research and put to use.
Where the committee is focusing its work.
Improving Digital Safety Evaluation Datasets
Auditing the foundations of how we measure safety.
A Maturity Model for Trust & Safety Tooling
Mapping the safety stack across stages of platform growth.
Functional Mapping of the Safety Tooling Landscape
A living map of the tools that keep platforms safer.
Safety tooling is the connective tissue of healthy online platforms — and yet much of it lives in proprietary stacks, behind NDAs, or in folk knowledge passed between practitioners.
The TRC is a research committee of the Trust & Safety Foundation. We connect researchers, practitioners, and engineers across industry, academia, and civil society to advance the field's understanding of safety tooling — and to make the research, datasets, and frameworks behind it easier to find and put to use. Our outputs are built for practitioners to adopt and for the field to extend.
